The Sense Perception of the Soul (Tertullian And Augustine Of Hippo) And Western Visiones Animarum
Abstract: In each era, culture, and religion, descriptions of the afterworld always employ the same language used to represent the material, physical, and surrounding world, where sense perception is paramount. However, when the afterworld presented is exclusively spiritual, such an approach raises at least one question: is it literal or figurative language to assess and interpret as such? This is a natural question concerning the visiones animarum, too, where perception relying on the five senses is the foundation for describing immaterial realities such as places, souls, punishments, joys, etc. The present article draws a comparison between two theories – issued respectively by Tertullian and Augustine – which may have provided the authors of visions with an ideological ground for descriptions focusing (almost) exclusively on sense perception.
