Ignace Batthyány’s Library through lists, inventories and catalogues
The organizing system of the library of the Earl Bishop Ignatius Batthyány (1741-1798) preserved in Alba Iulia has on its basis three categories of documents, kept in its archives: lists, catalogues and inventories. Beside these three categories, there also exists a rich correspondence of Ignatius and his collaborators, notably Imre (Emmerich) Dàniel, his first librarian, with Canon Antonius Martonfi, his first astronomer and Canon reader Stephan Fang. The study gives rise to questions around the content, the provenance and the former owners of these books. At the same time, it serves at restoring significant references which complete the history of the library, of books and ideas, thus identifying most of the libraries reunited in the Batthyaneum.
