History as a Form of Kitsch in the Vision of Milan Kundera
The unsettled history of the XXth century represented a temptation not only for historians and sociologists but also for intellectuals coming from less rigorous frameworks. Many of them are into an interpretation of history searching a personal meta-historical interpretation rather than scientific perspective specific to this field. The first perspective doesn’t have any epistemological expectations because its relevance can be found within a more relaxed context that can be considered, apparently more vaguely, a cultural context. One may wonder if such an initiative can be valid or, even if it is, there are doubts regarding its utility. This article has the aim to infirm these doubts and this way to prove that such a perspective can be useful. Having as a starting point Milan Kundera’s novel The unbearable lightness of being, this paper follows the relationship created between kitsch and history. Contemporary history, especially the one developed inside the Iron Curtain, and the kitsch have, in Milan Kundera’s perspective, a series of common properties which help us to perceive history from a new angle. This way, adapting some aesthetical properties, we will obtain an heuristic progress regarding the meta-historical limits and we will perceive communism from a new fresh perspective.
