Ion Flueraş and the Affiliation of the Socialist Movement from Romania
at the III-rd Communist International

After the dellegation of the Socialist Party returned to the country, the problem of affiliation to the IIIrd Communist International got to a new level characterized by the confrontation on that theme between the three existing trends inside the socialist movement. Cristescu, Popovici, Fabian, Rosvan, Dobrogeanu-Gherea started a dividing action following the Leninist model, trying to get control on the headquarters, on the party’s newspaper and to remove the unwanted leaders. On the 30th of January-3rd of February 1921, they convoked the General Council of the Socialist Party and the General Comittee of the Unions, which had to analyse the general situation of the party and of the unions after the general strike in October 1920, and to hear the report of the dellegation returning from the Soviet Russia. As the idea of affiliation to the Komintern triumphed, the split of the Socialist movement became a reality. In these circumstances, the Social-Democrats left the meeting and the party, Flueraş remaining attached to the values of democracy and of
Western social-democracy.
The Communist elements, taking advantage of the confusion within the Socialist organization and with Moscow’s
direct support, appealing to means taken from the Komintern, organized the congres from May 1921 which would state
the creation of the Communist party and ratify its affiliation to the IIIrd International. The leaders of the Social-
Democrat parties from Transylvania, Banat, and Bucovina reasserted their independence and declared that the congress’
decisions only involve the territory of the former Romanian Kingdom.
