Possible Typologies in Contemporary Comedy
Comedies imply the existence of some typologies of characters that give flavor and individuality to this literary genre. This is the way in which the so-called type characters – characterized by defining features – appear. This work analyzes the
new theories on the characters’ typology from contemporary comedy which tends to lose its purity. Current critical approaches identify not only characters belonging to typical typologies of a comedy, but also types and characters taken from tragedy. Type-characters specific to comedies are either social types dominated by exaggerated vices or human types characterized by general representatives such as: the fool and the jester. From tragedy, we encounter in contemporary comedy the image of the hero – often a non-hero or, more accurately, a pseudo-hero and the incarnation of destiny – it appears in the present as the representation of God. Type characters are determined by the obvious traits that fail to exceed them, living in its stereotype. Thus, as works of border, contemporary comedies give birth to a character dominated by ambiguity and heterogeneity.
