1875 – Romanian Liberalism, A Family Portrait

The aim of this paper is to provide a new insight into the way in which Romanian liberalism was being historically shaped. Far from being homogenous, the liberal party established in 1875 is a broad coalition that encompasses radicals as well as moderates. Those who are the true  holders of moderation, in the European sense,  namely the members of the political group of “ Junimea”, are not part of this new alliance. Paradoxically or not, the Romanian liberal party doesn’t reach out to political moderation around 1875.

Keywords: Liberalism, radicalism, evolution
