Rezumat

The role of school organisations from southern Transylvania in developing ethnoidentity structures (1849-1918)

In the second half of the 19th and the early 20th century, the school and students’ organizations played an important role in the affirmation of national sentiments and solidarity. The object of the present study is the way normative and behavioral structures inoculated future Romanian and Saxon national élites a set of values and attitudes specific to their original cultural environments. The Saxon coetus functioned as an open, integrative but also discriminating organization in assigning statutes on superior hierarchical level. The development of the community spirit represented the essence of Saxon identity. The Romanian reading societies had a closed, élite character, counting on the motivational engagement of members. They promoted an explicit nationalist speech, centered on the idea of liberty and unity.
