The Donor of the Trinity Cross in Boița (1640): a „Greek” Merchant?

The inscriptions of the Trinity stone cross in Boița (Sibiu County) have not been deciphered and published so far. The donor of the cross, Stoica the Greek, designated as such twice in the inscriptions of the monument, in the Slavonic-Romanian inscription and also in the Hungarian inscription, could be assimilated to the merchants who were often mentioned in the Customs registers as „Greeks”, a generic term for the merchants of Orthodox (Greek-Orthodox) confession. The term itself does not define ethnicity, because between those documentarily mentioned we may come across Romanians, Armenians and in general Christians from the Ottoman Empire or regions under its influence. Greek merchants paying taxes appear listed as subjects of the Prince of Transylvania, having a quality to which also the inscriptions of the cross in Boița refers. In this context, the inscription dated to 1640 shows Stoica the Greek in the light of a potent character, as a man of the Prince. Although there is no express mention diplomatic and archival documents of the time, we can assume that he had a similar status and may have served as harager (tax collector) in charge of gathering merchants’ fees. However, we cannot exclude the hypothesis that he might have belonged to the merchants performing outside the merchant companies.
