Abstract: This article reviews Veronica Lazăr’s recently published work, The Érudits and the Theologians (The Enlightenment Revolutionizes History, volume 1) in order to show that the book provides illuminating answers to at least two types of questions that concern both the scholarly approaches to the Enlightenment and the modern Western thought. First: in what ways and by what means is the discourse on history transformed so that the world is regarded as historical during the Enlightenment, without necessarily being subordinated to some supra-historical or theological essences? Which domains of life and society, such as morality, religion, art, law, or science, are affected most deeply and most rapidly by this particular process of historicization? Second: what if the sacred history is in fact earthly history and what do post-Reformation theologians have to say? How does the Church tackle the historicization of the sacred stories, the historical critique of the Holy Books and the modernization of the world? How can it adapt to the phenomenon that Veronica Lazăr describes as the “historicizing flow”, which inevitably entails the danger of relativism and the skepticism about the eternal and immutable truth of religion?
