The idiot: Dostoievski’s most plastic novel
Despite of the fluid or musical structure of his novels, Dostoievski showed an utmost interest for some of the Renaissance masterpieces with biblical subjects such as the crucifixion. Christ in thetomb, the painting made by Hans Holbein the Young, produced such an astonishing impact on the writer, that he turned it into a narative central motif within one of his most important writings, The idiot, focused on the complex issue regarding the tension between aesthetisc and Christian ethics, idealism and scepticism. The painting can be considered an exphrasis, am image extremely relevant for the peculiar vision of the Russian novelist about the human being.
