“Transylvanica” at Batthyaneum Library (III): Books from Alba Iulia (2)

The present study deals with the continuation of the author’s concerns upon the research and substantiation of the set libri transylvanici from Batthyaneum Library of Alba Iulia (branch of the Romanian National Library), and other 46 copies of old books printed in the former capital of the Principality of Transylvania between 1779 and 1820, starting with Ignatius de Batthyan’s work, Agamantis Palladii, Academiae Philaletorum Socii, Responsa […]. Anno MDCCLXXIX (1779), and up to Alexander Rudnay’s Litterae circulares (1820). Upon fixing the coordinates of the problems of the printed content, the theological and humanistic issues being prevailing for research, the author suggests that the substantiation of these libri transylvanici takes them into account as extension of the syntagm launched in the European historiography by the French historian François Furet who considered the books as ˝priviledged vehicles of ideas. As usual, selective research and the substantiatioon of several holographic and property notes, ex-libris, or various historical memos preserved in the pages of some libri transylvanici were highly employed. For this stage of valorization, there were tracked down several ex libris and notes that prove the book circulation in various geographical, political, social, and cultural environments of the Great Principality of Transylvania (the 17th and 18th century). Moreover, several historical notes certify the existence of some private or institutional libraries in Transylvania incorporated, in time, in the book fund of the library set in 1794 by count Ignatius Batthyani (1741-1798), a Roman Catholic bishop with residence in Alba Iulia.
