Henri H. Stahl: Frameworks and Representation of Tradition
Abstract: This article focuses on the concept of tradition as developed by the Romanian sociologist Henri H. Stahl. A complementary category of texts was used in order to develop article’s conclusions: the scientific works of Henri H. Stahl, his published memoirs and his extensive talks with Zoltán Rostás. In the first part, the article mentions the main works where the sociologist describes piece by piece the concept of tradition, listing and critically evaluating their reception at the time of publication. The main part of the article is dedicated to the description and analysis of the obște pe bază de tradiție difuză [the society based on diffused tradition]. This is a concept developed and defined by Henri H. Stahl himself. Using the examples provided by the above-mentioned works which are quoted within current paper, the model of tradition as proposed by Henri H. Stahl is redesigned. Its framework is discussed taking into account its mandatory elements: the preservation of tradition in social groups, the function of connecting the group through tradition, the rich relations between tradition and social memory, the importance of the phenomenon of social stability.
