From Militarism to the Soldier’s Ideal: The Conceptual History of the Hungarian War Ideal in the Interwar Period
Rezumat
Abstract: Although contemporaries regarded the First World War as the “war to end all wars,” the concept of war regained relevance during the interwar period. To assess the scope of the concept and compare it across nations, a specific national interpretation is required. This paper explores the conceptual history of militarism in Hungary through the writings of contemporary Hungarian and foreign authors. On the one hand, I attempt to analyse the diverse interpretations of the term, considering its varying meanings and political orientations. On the other hand, I examine the conceptual transformation within the framework of literature on German militarism. It can be stated that there was no unified interpretation of the “war ideal” in Hungary during the interwar period. While the right-wing viewed it as an ideal societal state, the left perceived the Horthy era as militaristic, highlighting its martial characteristics. The “soldier’s ideal” – a “Hungarianised” form of militarism – emerged in the late 1930s, championed by right-wing politicians, soldiers, and writers. For them, the concept of “intellectual defence” served as both a competitor and an alternative, opposing war and alignment with Germany.
