Funerary archaeology on the Lower Mureş valley
The article is aiming to submit the present stage of knowledge regarding funerary discoveries from 10th-11th century’s on the lower Mureş valley. The geographical boundaries of the analyzed territory comprises the final section of the Mureş River before it flows into the Tisa. In the present study we will discuss only the finds from the present-day territory of Romania (the part between Lipova and Nădlac). Known as a space of political, economical and cultural interference, the area in question supplied finds of funerary character since the nineteenth century. From this point on the number of the finds constantly grew reaching today almost fifty identified points (all along the lower Mureş valley, from Lipova to Szeged) of cemeteries, isolated graves or even only dispersed finds that could indicate the presence of funerary complexes (see the map).
Concerned with the archaeological research of this period of the lower Mureş region, we dealt with three historical periods as it follows: the period until 1918, then the period between 1918 and 1989 and the last one, from 1989 until the present. For each period I chose to present a less-known case to the scholarship and in the same time relevant for the historical period under research.
