Abstract: The second part of the study submits to debate the issue of classifying G. Călinescu’s novel Bietul Ioanide [Poor Ioanide] as either Socialist Realist or as subversive, two typological categorizations equally controversial. We will focus our attention on the reviews the book has received, attempting to demonstrate that the most ideologically charged reception of the book, the one provided by the detested N. Popescu-Doreanu, proves to be one of the most professional readings, executed from a Socialist Realist perspective. However, the verdict given by this literary critic, despite its decisive nature, when combined with other data, does not clarify the novel’s placement within either of the two paradigms. Yet, this was indeed the situation for most books that appeared during the Stalinist period, especially those attempting to recreate, or rather, surpass the Socialist Realist canon.
