Jean Crespin’s Works in Transylvanian Libraries

Jean Crespin (~1520-1572) is one of those remarkable personalities of the French Renaissance who occupies a significant place in a few important Transylvanian libraries as well through his literary productions. Jean Crespin served Protestantism not only with his rich historical, judicial, and philological knowledge, but also with his activity as a printer. A worthy representative of the Renaissance, he was a hard working and documented author, editor, commentator, translator or preface writer. Through his works he contributed to the complete affirmation of the French historiography in the Renaissance period. The 14 copies of his works that are kept in three big libraries in Transylvania are well conserved, mostly bound artistically in leather or parchment, with ex-librises and with a lot of manuscript markings. Their presence denotes the interest of Transylvanian intellectuals in the works of this French author and we believe that it is both necessary and worth emphasizing their value here as well.
