E. L. Doctorow. The Fascinating New World and Its “Histories”
Considered one of the most important representatives of the contemporary American novel, E. L. Doctorow is also “the great poet of the radical past of America”. This essay entitled “E. L. Doctorow. The Fascinating New World and Its Histories” analyzes the delicate balance perfectly maintained by the author between the historical themes of his fiction and a new kind of reading that he himself suggested to his lecturers. Therefore, if “The Book of Daniel” is centered upon certain political themes, “Ragtime”, an exquisite example of musical narrative, tries to depict a well-defined historical epoch through an evident process of selectivity, whereas “Billy Bathgate” proves to be a “picaresque” novel in its own right. Doctorow’s fiction is also an excellent example of “postmodern metafiction” and a convincing work of great literature of the late 20th century.
