From historiography of Romanian balneology in the XVIII-XIXth centuries
Balneology is one of the most frequently met subject in different areas: medicine, geography, chemistry, geology or history. However, people went to spas since Roman times, as evidence there are many artifacts and inscriptions from the well known thermae Călan (Hunedoara), Germisara (Hunedoara, today Geoagiu- Baths) and Herculane (CaraşSeverin). The study wants to present the evolution of Romanian balneology in XVIII-XIXth centuries when there were found many mineral waters and there were made some arrangements for springs abstraction. I identified some papers written especially in the XIXth century which present the natural therapeutic factors spread all over Romanian territory. Nyulas Ferentz’s paper about Rodna’s mineral springs, Vasilie Popp’s work about Covasna, Bodoc and Vâlcele (some spa villages from Transylvania), Ludovic Steege’s notices about Slănic Moldova spa or Dimitrie Apostolescu’s informations about Strunga Spa (from Iaşi, Moldavia) are some of the main papers which describe the mineral springs with suitable establishments. There were also made some chemical analyses to found out their composition and effects in treating various diseases. The papers focused on the waters from Transylvania, but there were also presented some spas from Moldavia and Romanian country. The literature of balneology from the XIXth century had a substantial contribution to the knowledge of healing powers of the mineral water springs because it gave many information about the chemical composition of the water, their therapeutic effects and their manner of use of the doctors and patients.
