Formal Disobedience in Contemporary Romanian Feminist Literature
Abstract: This paper explores how contemporary feminist literature from Romania mobilizes formal disobedience as a strategy to dismantle the contingency of form itself. Starting from traditions that treat form as a neutral, apolitical parameter or one instrumentalized strictly for aesthetic purposes, the current study argues that form is reimagined as a conceptual praxis, where the politics of knowledge, subjectivity, and aesthetic legibility are radically renegotiated. Drawing on decolonial theory (Mignolo 2009), the Marxist tradition of political formalism (Adorno 1997), and critiques of immediacy (Kornbluh 2023), the paper positions formal disobedience as a practice of unlearning: the dismantling of the aesthetic regime of modernity/coloniality, a reorientation towards situated, pluralistic, and affective modes of knowledge, and a repoliticization of form. Building on Jameson’s theory regarding the co-optation of form from the center and content from the (semi-)periphery, the hypothesis is formulated that form itself is a colonial instrument, making it necessary not only to decolonize content but also to address form, un-learning it by refusing its historical complicity in imperialist and patriarchal regimes of intelligibility. The subversive forms proposed for analysis in this paper include the sonnet, marginalia, and the reconfiguration of the institutional imperative as a pretext for autoethnography (Medeea Iancu, The Weaver. The Instrumental Work [Țesătoarea. Opera instrumentală] 2023; Mădălina Oprea, Curriculum. Refrains of Recovery and Memory [Curriculum. Refrene ale recuperării și memoriei] 2023; alexandru adam, b-c. anthology compiled by madam sandu of the complete works of alexandru adam [b-c. antologie realizată de madam sandu a lucrărilor integrale ale lui alexandru adam] 2024). The study follows the ideology of forms and their local and transnational history, examining literary systems in which increasingly diverse autotheoretical formulas coalesce, generating various modes of text formatting aimed at anticapitalist resistance and opposition to neoliberalism.
