The Religious Content of the Transylvanian Enlightenment. Predichele (The Sermons) by Petru Maior (Buda, 1810-1811)
The author of the present study points to the way in which the religious tradition of the homiletic texts shaped the key ideas of Enlightenment. The starting point is acase study, Predichele (The Sermons) by Petru Maior, printed in the University Typography of Buda (1810). The present work demonstrates that Maior’s homiletics comes from tradition butfinally makes use of the ideology of Enlightenment, the fundamentals of the Catholic Reform, and the Reform Policy from Vienna making convincing arguments for the type of Aufklärung practised in the Transylvanians’ Romanian culture.
