Why Ștefan Killed Ela: Facts, Plans, and Scripts in Camil Petrescu’s Last Night of Love, First Night of War
Abstract: Using tools from cognitive narratology and cultural studies, my essay aims to offer a new interpretation regarding the ending of one of the most famous couples in Romanian literature: Ștefan and Ela Gheorghidiu from Camil Petrescu’s The Last Night of Love, the First Night of War (1930). Contrary to standard explanations, which implicitly assume the couple’s divorce followed by Ștefan’s sentencing to forced labour for treason/desertion, I argue that the only explanation consistent both with the internal evidence of Petrescu’s work and with the Romanian jurisprudence of the period is that of a crime-of-passion scenario.
