Data about the Border Guard Schools of the Regiment from Orlat (1773-1851)
The schools situated on the territories of the Romanian border guards Regiment 1 were establish for the training of the sons of the border guards to become noncommissioned officers within the specific military subunits. These represented first organized and attested form of military education from Transylvania. Education was compulsory for all border guars’ children with ages between 6 and 12 years. The main subjects were: reading, calculation, home economics, agriculture and religion. Border Guard Schools had a major importance for the area in which they functioned, ensuring to the boys access to science and culture, especially in reducing the number of illiterates.
