Dascăl de țară. Autoportret memorialistic „la comandă”
Rezumat
Countryside teacher. A “custom-made” memory self-portrait
Abstract: TIn this brief presentation, I assessed various moments in the discursive evolution of the concept of the teacher dedicated to their school and community (“apostle”), as reflected in the memorial literature published in the twentieth century. I highlight that there are no radical innovations or ruptures but rather accumulations, overlaps, several weak contestations or unassumed contradictions, and possibly some distortions of meanings specific to the past. It is a defining image for the self-representation of these authors, as it goes beyond professional success, expressing self-fulfillment in a widely accepted and socially validated form. It is precisely why it cannot be reduced to a mere cliché, as it has always conveyed sufficient credibility despite covering so many eras, political regimes, and social transformations. The inclusion of this concept into memoirs, however, bears the hallmark of the discourse specific to the time, internalised by the authors, whether patriotic (nationalist), “Haretist” (after the renowned Minister of Education, Spiru Haret), “popular democratic” (socialist) or post-communist. The authors thus surrender themselves and posterity to oversized representations and cultural codes requiring a profound re-reading to decipher the messages comprised – deliberately – in the memories told to the world by the old “teachers”.
