Fragments of Humanity: The Transistrian Ghetto seen through the Eyes of a Young Girl named Sonia Palty 1

This paper explores the description of the deportation to a ghetto in Transnistria in 1942 of Sonia Palty, a young Romanian Jewish girl, insisting on some aspects that underline the storage of humanity as a form of resistance in such a climate. The life in the ghetto seen through the eyes of a fourteen-year-old girl demands, apart from the description of the living atrocities, the presentation of such common events as the birthday celebration, the falling in love for the first time, the Christmas Day and singing carols. The childhood memories give to the experience a humanised perspective upon realities. The storytelling in the ghetto acts as a mean of breaking out in the secured space before deportation, and heals the traumas lived by a child.

Keywords: Romanian Holocaust, trauma, childhood memories, Jewishness, post-communism.
