The Inculturation Method of Father Matteo Ricci in China

The study presents the inculturation model of the Gospel in China between 1590-1610 through the work of Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit from Macerata. His biographical data, his close relationship with a transdisciplinary humanistic culture, his excellent memory of philologist and philosopher, his formation of mathematician and geometrician, geographer and astrologer make of Matteo Ricci the only European retained by the memory of the Chinese Encyclopedia. For the modern world, his accommodation principle of the Christian information to the Chinese people at the time, such as inserted in the humanistic culture by Erasmus of Rotterdam, remains one of the key strategies against the anti-Christian mentality due to indolence and cultural mediocrity.
Keywords: history of Christianity, Christianity and Renaissance, the spread of Christianity in China, inculturation of Christianity, Matteo Ricci
