Field Researches at Drăguș 1987 – 1988. A Puzzle in Progress

Between August 1987 and August 1988, the Society of the Romanian Students in Folklore organized two field researches in Drăguș. They were attended by students from the few existing faculties of letters (known as faculties of philology during the communist regime), together with their Folklore teachers. The two campaigns were little known to the public at that time and they have remained largely unknown until the present. They were part of a series of field researches called folklore camps, organized during the summers between 1982 and 1991.
Declaratively, the above mentioned camps had to focus on issues concerning family life and the traditional household in Drăguș. They were presented in a report addressed to the officials of the regime as an expected continuation of the researches on the ”customs linked to family life, to practices connected to birth, marriage, funeral”, initiated during previous camps in the regions of Bucovina, Chioar, the Transylvanian Plain, the Banat Mountains region and the Subcarpathian region of Oltenia. Inevitably, organizing student camps for folklore research which involved a considerably great number of participants (approximately 50 for each case) and giving a multidisciplinary perspective to the research, the project directly referred to the campaigns carried out by Gusti, between the two World Wars.
Field Researches at Drăguș 1987 -1988. A Puzzle in Progress draws attention to the existence of these two campaigns and, placing them in the context of the last years of the communist regime in Romania, considers them discrete replicas of the research carried by Gusti ‘s teams.
