What Happens when Political Pluralism Is Abandoned? REVIEW: Petre Andrei, Petru P. Andrei, Memorii și istorii
Abstract: When, through a dictatorship of the majority, politics and political pluralism are abandoned in favor of authoritarian, dictatorial, one-party regimes, not only are individual rights and freedoms suppressed, but also the creative force of society. The volume Memorii și Istorii [Memoirs and Histories], reviewed here, exemplifies through a microhistory—and of course through testimonies and documents—the way in which the members of a family, father and son, were victims of such totalitarian regimes, as 20th-century Romania transitioned from a liberal democratic regime, capable of improvement and self-reform, through King Carol II’s dictatorship, then the Legionary regime and Antonescu’s regime, to the Bolshevik-style totalitarian dictatorship when the totalitarian communist regime was forcibly installed. Consequences: the father, Petre Andrei, an active and irreproachable politician, commits suicide to avoid becoming a victim of the Legionnaires; the son, Petru P. Andrei, is arrested, mistreated during interrogations, and imprisoned under the communist regime, spending a life below his creative potential until the fall of the communist regimes. The history of 20th-century Romania is reflected through the fate of a family of responsible and clear-minded intellectuals.
Key words: anti-totalitarianism, democratism, fascism, Petre Andrei, Petru P. Andrei, politics.
