What would disappear if literature disappeared? (four comments
on the exile of literature)
The paper is a general comment on the recurring theme of the institutional decline of literary study and the death of the traditional canon, as discussed by Mircea Martin in his essay „The Exile of Literature”. In Romania, as elsewhere, the issue has been fiercely debated; I try to show how some of the changes in attitude towards the traditional can be better explained by a careful analysis of the logical consequences of the tenets of important theoretical schools, namely formalism and sociology. I also argue that the traditional canon should not primarily be considered as an educational device and that its fate does not directly depend on its didactic use.
Keywords: literary theory, sociology of literature, formalism, literary education
