The Book for the United Romanian Clerical Elite (the 19th Century)
The present study analyzes the way in which the united clerical elite in Transylvania reported itself to the book. The author investigates the way in which the interest of this elite in the spread of the books was reflected at the level of local (urban and rural) communities from the perspective of the regulations of the Synod between 1782 and 1900.
The research is based on the fact that, at the decision-making level, the Synod had in the Romanian society that unique ability to transform the impossibility of the common man’s, priest’s, and parishioner’s access to the book in something feasible, and the possibility to turn the reading of the books into a gesture of daily occurrence on a social scale.
