The influence of German culture on the theatrical and musical life of Sibiu in the late XIXth and early XXth centuries
The Romanian culture in Transylvania at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th was mostly influenced by the German culture. Sibiu was a place of a multicultural tradition due to its Romanian, German or Hungarian inhabitants. The relatively high number of theatre performances and symphonic concerts announced in the local papers (Telegraful Român, Tribuna, Transilvania) proves that the German theatre and music were favorably received by the public in spite of its heterogenic structure. The most representative German playwrights and composers were known in Sibiu through their works that contributed to the spiritual enlightenment of the public.
