Rezumat
The battle of Varna (November 10th 1444) Reflected in the contemporary account of Zotikos Paraspondylos
The contemporary of Zotikos Paraspondylos regarding the battle of Varna is preserved on a 12 pages manuscript, Parisinus Coislinianus 316, initially found at Bibliotheca Coisliniana in Montfaucon. He was later transferred to the National Library in Paris. The manuscript, which is written in Greek, was reveal and published for the first time by the historian Émile Legrand in 1874. His author, Zotikos Paraspondylos, is totally unknown. According to him, he was an eyewitness to the battle of Varna in November 10th 1444. In the 12 pages manuscript the author communicates interesting information on: preparing the expedition, belligerents’ effectives, military headquarters, the strategy adopted by the belligerents, battle development and its outcome. The main character of the story, according to the author himself, is John Hunyadi.
