Barbu Delavrancea between the modernization of society and the modernity of literature
The study observes the interesting contradictions illustrated by Barbu Ştefănescu-Delavrancea’s conception of literature, almost paradigmatic for the contradictions identifiable in the thinking of Romanian writers from the end of the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth. Thus, the stuy focuses on Delavrancea’s reception speech for the Romanian Academy, regarding the aeshetics of the folkloric poetry. This speech clearly shows the limits of Delavrancea’s contradictory thinking – on the one hand, he understood the necessity of modernization in what concerned Romanian society; on the other hand, he could not accept what he called decadent and unhealthy contemporary poetry, claiming that folkloric poetry represents the unique poetic model.
