Emil Cioran, “a chronic annotator”
The present study attempts to explore the role of Cioran as author of numerous notebooks, published one year after his death, in 1998, under the title Cahiers 1957–1972. A part of the article is theoretical: Does the note open up possibilities not inherent in the aphorism or the fragment? Is it meaningful to speak of a genre of the note, or is that marginalia something else entirely, a pre-study that the author intends to use or incorporate into a later text? Finally, considering the multiplicity of classificatory schema, is the note something one can synthesize? Put differently, do the multiple “uses” of the note – in Cioran’s writing but also in the notebooks and aphorisms of George Perros, Pierre Reverdy or Friedrich Nietzsche – define or defy the contours of the note as an emerging genre?
