Remembering and Memory in Miguel Delibes’ Novels
Abstract: Often considered one of the most representative Spanish writers of the 20th century, Miguel Delibes (1920 – 2010) carefully avoided the extreme formal innovations that may be found within some of his contemporaries’ works, like Camilo José Cela or Juan Goytisolo, in order to put into question, using certain rather traditional techniques and narrative strategies, the importance of history and especially human being’s ability to cope with all the challenges implied by the relationship between the personal past and the great Spanish historical events. The Civil War is one of the most important moments of the national past and in a way or another, all Delibes’ characters try to find the perfect strategy to understand their own present and also to address the fratricide confrontation that literally marked the modern history of Spain. On the other hand, the protagonists permanently reevaluate their personal history and do their best to explain their own behavior or to remember their loved ones within long soliloquies (like in the novel Five Hours with Mario) or profound dialogues (in Woman in Red against a Grey Background).
Keywords: Spanish Civil War, historic fiction, 20th century novel, memory, remembrance, psychological fiction.
