Representations of Identity in Memoirs of Romanian Writers in Exile
Inextricably intertwined with the dynamics of identities in the present-day Romanian culture, the memoirs of Romanian writers in exile have provided essential ground for the analysis of the symbolic roles that these writers have assumed in the past as well as in the present in relation to their home and host cultural spaces. Having experienced uprootedness that entailed cultural alienation, with a significant impact on their sense of identity, these writers have created, within the limits of their texts, compensatory worlds in which the (auto-)biographical ideological frames determining “official” representations of identity are reshaped by aesthetic ideologies. Assumed and integrated in the process of identity reconstruction, these aesthetic ideologies allow the emergence of invariable patterns that concern the writers’ relationship with their homeland, which revolve around either the “sense of belonging” or, on the contrary, the “sense of difference”.
