The theory and decline of literature. Another French perspective
In his last book, Vincent Kaufmann tries to approach literary theory from a less „French” point a view. He emphasizes the role of French literary theory in recent French culture, and puts literature in a wider cultural perspective. However, he does not pay enough attention to the avatars of theory in more recent humanistic researches – philosophy, ethics or history of ideas – in which theory seems to syrvice and to give new fruits, even if it is not any more to consider part of literary studies. Kaufmann’s coined concept – mouvance théorique – inscribes theory in a new epistemic and historical discourse in French culture and contributes to a better cultural exchange between American and French cultural discourses.
