Tradition and modernity in the modern Japanese novel.
The East-West relationship in Shusaku Endo’s prose
This article approaches two general aspects concerning the mechanisms and processes that led to the emergence of the modern Japanese novel and, at the same time, it follows the historical and socio-cultural context in which the evolution of the modern Japanese novel took place. The first part of the article describes the historical and literary phenomena of the twentieth century such as the Mieji Restoration (1868) or the influence of the West in the Japanese literary development process. The second part examines, in relation to the biography and work of the Japanese author Shusaku Endo, a new perspective related to the intercultural dialogue, which is relevant for describing the relationship between tradition and modernity in Japanese literature.
