Literatura basarabeană – o negociere între Vest și Est: exportul prozatorilor moldoveni și dubla periferie

Bessarabian Literature Between the West and the East: The Export of Moldovan Prose Writers and the Double Periphery

Abstract: Given the gap between the “Damrosch model”, advocating for cultural translation with “liberal” circulation, and the (post)Marxist perspective outlined by Moretti, influenced by Wallerstein, which shifts focus to “master-slave”/“oppressor-oppressed” dynamics to highlight symbolic and economic inequalities within literary spheres (as per Bourdieu & Sapiro), this paper aims to illustrate that the “hospitality” of centers towards peripheries should not be overemphasized, whether in terms of familiarity or from an Eastern eccentricity standpoint. The case study I propose (Vasile Ernu (Born in the USSR, 2006), Iulian Ciocan (Before Brezhnev Died, 2007), Liliana Corobca (Kinderland, 2013), and Tatiana Țîbuleac (The Glass Garden, 2018)) demonstrates that some authors represent Western symptomatic trends (Țîbuleac), while others embody Eastern sensibilities (Ernu), or find themselves in a nuanced balance between the two (Ciocan & Corobca). This validates the notion that major cultural and literary hubs (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia) vie for the position of “temporary sub-centers” (Thomsen), leveraging interest in peripheries to enhance visibility. Simultaneously, without attributing a conspiratorial tone to this dynamic, I find a discussion on the assimilation of regional literatures into central ones through Zohar’s inter-systemic transfer theory relevant. Thus, the international success of Bessarabian authors is achieved either through “therapeutic writing” practices (Gefen), as exemplified by Țîbuleac, or via fetishization common in former communist bloc countries (Ernu and Ciocan), alongside similarities with international literary paradigms (Corobca). These levels intersect, suggesting a multifaceted pathway to recognition.
