Naum Petrovici – Starting from a versified text from 1801
Among the documents remaining from the lawyer and poet Vasile Aaron (1780-1821), preserved by the Sibiu County Department of the National Archives, a versified text dated 1801 can be found. This text reviews the types of marriage available to a young man, each with its own drawbacks. Signed with initials, the text may be attributed to Naum Petrovici, a Pestan versifier and clerk born in Banat. Our paper synthesizes what has been written up to now about this little known intellectual and tracks his literary and professional evolution. It also highlights his merits in organizing and modernizing the Romanian public education in territories under Hungarian jurisdiction at the beginning of that century. The paper also indicates his date of death as being August 1824 and establishes his place among the Enlightenment literati in Banat in the first decades of the XIXth century.
