German Literature in Communist Romania. Transformations
The literature of the German minority in communist Romania was subjected to a seemingly contradictory treatment. If in the immediate post-war period it was exposed to a very strict ideological control, Nicolae Ceauşescu kept it away, at least apparently, from the terror which was representative for Gheorghiu Dej’s reign. To be able to enjoy a favorable image in the West, Ceauşescu privileged the position of German literature within the romanian borders. Paradoxically, however, he did not protect it from another instrument of power alertness, better even than the institution of censorship, namely The Securitate, which controlled the writings that could be published in the West. Ceauşescu’s fear of not damaging his image in the West led him to closely follow the ranks of the German literary movements. Securitate Officers created a complex network of surveillance, which involved the infiltration among newspaper editors and publishers, but also among the restricted circles of the authors. The aim was to block any attempt of expressing compromising ideas against Ceauşescu’s regime abroad. The actions of the Securitate have gradually led to the emigration of German-speaking authors and thus to the disappearance of a valuable literature.
