In the shade of saints and mystics – a portrait of Cioran as a an “aesthetician hagiographer”
This article is based on Cioran’s Romanian and French works, analyzed from the perspective of multiple connections between his literary and religious experiences. In the first part, we will identify the main reasons of Cioran’s admiration of saints and mystics, the second part being dedicated to some mystical themes that are exploited by Cioran, the third part consisting in a text analysis focused on the intertextual use that Cioran makes of some English and German phrases that express the evanescent character of life (a mystical theme, by excellence). A place apart will be taken by the association that Cioran establishes between the exploits of different saints and mystics and the exploits of Shakespearean characters.
